This book presents a comprehensive course covering the entire KS2 composing curriculum in a way which is easy for non-specialist teachers to understand and use. It is also fun to deliver and full of useful hints in encouraging creativity.
Detailed lesson plans are presented in small timed chunks and accompanied by thorough explanatory notes. In a new system – based on listening and analysing sounds, and then making patterns and stories out of them – the scheme is, in fact, an excellent resource for lessons in many school subjects.
Though full of strategies and tips for teachers with a music background, KEY STAGE 2 COMPOSING is specifically written for teachers who have no knowledge of music theory at all and little confidence in teaching music.
The Introduction discusses music lessons and composing, giving precise links to the curriculum. This is followed by a term’s worth of very comprehensive composing lessons with background and explanations. There are then four projects which are likely to take a half-term each to complete, and six one-off short projects for occasional lessons. The book concludes with further guidance on rooms and equipment, inventing new projects and giving performances, answering common questions from non-specialist music teachers.
The scheme can form a complete year’s work, or be a resource for all the composing elements in KS2 music lessons. The book is copiable throughout which means it can be shared by KS2 teachers throughout the school.
