Unlocking the Reader in Every Child

There is one big problem with reading.  Not everyone approaches it in the same way.

While most of us have within our brains a predisposition to read, that inherited ability to decode written words still has to be pushed into action through the exposure to appropriate written materials and via enthusiastic and informed teaching.

Matters can be made harder for some children if there is only limited support and understanding from home.  Which is why it is so important to allow children to draw on the route to literacy that they find the easiest to follow.

This volume opens with a series of articles about the different ways of teaching reading and introduces practical ideas, such as building phonological awareness, aiding whole-word recognition, phonics, turning decoders into readers, and the notion of using mixed methods.

Also included are many games that can be played, techniques for helping strugglers, and working with reluctant readers.

The practical teaching ideas include developing listening skills, tapping into what the child can ‘read’ already, using appropriate reading matter, and the establishment of reading buddies.

But above all the emphasis is on meeting individual needs.  The volume considers that notion of multiple intelligences, learning styles, and the range of special needs that can have a profound impact on a child’s ability to learn to read.
